What is the Greener Home Scheme?

The Greener Home Scheme offers assistance to homeowners who are considering the installation of a new renewable energy heating system for either a new or currently occupied home. Administered by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI), the scheme aims to increase the use of sustainable energy technologies within Ireland.

What renewable energy technologies are available within the Greener Home Scheme?

Renewable energy is what’s derived from the Earth’s endless supply of energy sources, which can be provided indefinitely. By using renewable energy, homes in Ireland can reduce their dependency on gas, oil and other CO2 emitting fuels. The energy sources include:

• Solar power (sunshine)
• Heat pumps (extracting heat energy from the earth and water)
• Biomass (by burning energy crops and certain types of wood)

Available SEI grants

Installing renewable energy heating systems in a home costs a lot more than installing ordinary heating systems. The Greener Home Scheme aims to support homeowners with such renewable energy system installations by approving grants for the work. While it’s expensive to install, these systems are cheaper to operate in the long run.

The SEI not only assists in installing the systems, it also provides information on making your home more energy efficient for long-term cost saving and eco-friendliness.

Applicable terms, conditions and rules

The SEI grants for the Greener Home Scheme provide aid for the cost of equipment. Labour charges on the installation must be paid by the homeowner. As of 22nd July 2008, the Greener Home Scheme requires applicants to meet the following criteria.

• The applicant must be the homeowner (tenants are not eligible)
• The home must be at least one year old
• The grant must be applied for before beginning any installations. No grants are available for completed or already commenced work.
• The heating system used must be approved by the SEI (as per the list)
• The installer you contract must be approved by the SEI (as per the list)

SEI grants for the Greener Home Scheme are available for up to €3500. The grant approved will depend on the heating system you choose and the cost of it.

How to apply

As of 22nd July 2008, the Greener Home Scheme entered its 3rd phase. New applications can be made to the Greener Home Scheme via postal mail.
